How to Dispose of an Artificial Christmas Tree in the Boston, MA area 2025-2026
Artificial trees are a great option for families that struggle with the allergens real trees shed. These trees can also be reused year after year, and some even come pre-lit or pre-decorated to save time during Christmas setup. However, when an artificial tree has served its final use in your Boston-area home or business, the disposal options are more limited. Here are some ways to get rid of an artificial Christmas tree.
Donate Artificial Tree to Charity: If your artificial Christmas tree is in good condition and can still be enjoyed by another person, you should donate it to a charity or thrift store. The Thrift Shop of Boston and Savers are Boston-area charity thrift stores that accept donations of gently used Christmas decorations. National chain Goodwill operates numerous locations in Massachusetts and accepts donations of gently used holiday decorations.
Sell Your Artificial Tree: If your artificial tree is in superb condition then it might be able to score a few dollars in the right market. List your tree on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, NextDoor, or OfferUp.
Salvage Your Artificial Tree Parts for Crafts: Why buy Christmas craft supplies new when you can cut up your artificial tree in poor condition? Turn your former Christmas tree into upcycled Christmas crafts like wreaths, mini-trees, or garlands.
Put Your Artificial Tree Out For Bulk Trash Pickup: Artificial trees in poor conditions are not candidates for resale or donation, you should dispose of them if you are not going to salvage materials. Check your local Boston curbside trash pickup rules to learn how and when to put your artificial tree out for collection.
